About the time you think you have heard it all, something else crashes in that is so evil that you can barely believe it. I am not talking about the outrageous things currently happening in America; I am talking about the new wave of unbelief in the Church that throws people’s traditional foundations of faith into a tailspin by rejecting original sin and the atonement through Jesus’ death and resurrection. It is called “progressive Christianity,” which is a deceptive movement that methodically works to usher into the Church and churches a new gospel. It is also spreading into “Christian” colleges and seminaries.

What is the Christian gospel? 1 Corinthians 15:1-7.  Paul wrote in 56AD, about the gospel given by God when the church was first formed, that predated Christian writings. “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.”

Why did Jesus have to die?

“…the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith” (Romans 3:22-25).

“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind” (Ephesians 2:1-3).

There is more historical evidence to prove the death and resurrection of Christ than any other event in the history of the world. Historian Thomas Hale points out, “If Jesus had, in fact, not risen from the dead, Paul could not have written these words; there were too many people still around who would have called him a liar.”

It is critical that all true Christians understand the importance of the gospel. The death and resurrection of Jesus, or they too will be deceived by other false gospels. The Progressive Christians do not believe in sin, and therefore there was no need for Jesus to die.

Progressive Christianity is aggressively working its way into mainline Christianity is far from being Christian. Some of their beliefs include:

  1. Evangelical Christianity is evil. It is more about what you do rather than what you believe. They say they do not believe in universal truth, but in fact, they do by saying there is no truth!
  2. The Bible is not inspired by God but rather a journal of man’s thoughts and ideas.
  3. God is a cosmic child abuser because he killed His son; on the other hand, they do not believe in right and wrong, making the movement extremely hypocritical. Jesus is a victim of an evil God.
  4. No need for atonement because they do not believe in sin or sinners. Brian McClaren, one of the founders of the emergent church, calls the biblical gospel, pagan.

What are some of the signs to identify progressive Christianity?

  1. The gospel is no longer preached, but rather social justice is the main focus.
  2. Biblical authority gives way to personal feelings and doing good things.
  3. The divine inspiration of the scriptures gives way to whatever makes me feel good. This includes a complete relaxation of all sexual ethics that are addressed in the scriptures.

Alisa Childers, in her book Another Gospel, tells the story of her pastor’s deceitful work of moving his church into the progressive Christian movement. Many lives were ruined by those who put their faith in a man who called himself “Pastor”. She left the church and said in her book, “Throughout this journey, I’ve discovered that the core historical claims of Christianity are true. I’ve learned that the Bible, though attacked and maligned century after century, stands tall atop the rubble of accusations that have been piled up against it. I’ve come to know that the Christian worldview is the only one that can sufficiently explain reality. I’ve rediscovered Jesus . . . the confounding preacher from Nazareth who split history in two and who kept his word to never leave me.”
