What is the #1 reason why people are turned off by Christianity?
Sadly, the vast majority of non-Christ followers choose not to pursue a relationship with Christ because of the duplicity of Christians that they witness in every day life. The word “hypocrite”, that we read in the Bible, comes from the Greek word, hypokrites, meaning “a person who claims or pretends to have certain beliefs about what is right but who behaves in a way that disagrees with those beliefs (merriam-webster.com).
Jesus used the term when addressing some of the religious people of his day. “"You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'" (Matthew 15:7-9)
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence." (Matthew 23:25)
Do people consistently see Christ in you by the way you live and love others? How can we help stop this duplicity in the church today?
