How was Christ’s death, suffering aside, a great price for Him?
The burden of sin.
Because God is holy, He can have nothing to do with sin. It was necessary for Jesus, the God-man, to carry the burden of sin for all of humanity while on the cross. (2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us....”
As human beings, we have no idea how difficult it must have been for Jesus to take on that burden of sin.
A separation from God
Because of God’s holiness, it was necessary for Him to turn His face away from Jesus while Jesus carried the sin of the world on His shoulders.
That is why Jesus cries out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34)
This was the first time in eternity that there was a separation within the perfect love relationship of the Trinity.
Dr. D. A. Carson reminds us, “Within this cry of dereliction [abandonment], the horror of the world’s sin and the cost of our salvation are revealed.”
